Back Pain Q&A

What causes back pain?

Back pain is common in people of all ages, particularly adults. It can be acute, lasting for less than six months, or it can be chronic, meaning the pain lasts for six months or longer. Common causes of back pain include:

Herniated disc

Between the vertebrae in the spine are discs that serve as shock absorbers. They also cushion the vertebrae and improve flexibility in the spine. While the discs have a hard case on the outside, they have a soft center. Over time, the discs can deteriorate, causing the soft center to push through and irritate the surrounding nerves.

Spinal stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a condition in which your spinal column narrows over time. This can limit your mobility and flexibility, while compressing nerves in your spine.

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve stretches from your lumbar spine, or low back, down the back of your leg. If this nerve becomes compressed, it can cause dull or shooting pain in your low back, hips, or leg. Sciatica typically only affects one side of your body.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a chronic condition that leads to joint inflammation. The most common type is osteoarthritis (OA), which causes the flexible cartilage that cushions your joints to deteriorate. If you have arthritis in the joints in your back, you may experience chronic pain.

How is back pain diagnosed?

Diagnosing back pain is an individualized process. At North Andover Chiropractic, the team asks you questions regarding your pain. They need to know when it started, how intense it feels, and which treatments you’ve tried. The team may also perform a comprehensive physical exam.

If necessary, the team may also recommend tests, such as bloodwork, an X-ray, or an MRI, to gather further information.

What are the treatments for back pain?

The team at North Andover Chiropractic uses many different modalities to treat back pain, including:

Cold laser therapy

Cold laser therapy is FDA-approved to treat musculoskeletal pain. The treatment uses low levels of light to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. Unlike traditional laser therapy, it doesn’t heat your tissues. The treatment is gentle and effective at relieving back pain and reducing inflammation.

Flexion distraction

Flexion distraction is a noninvasive treatment for low back back. This type of therapy aims to increase spinal motion by relieving pressure from compressed and herniated discs in the back with a motorized table. It can help reduce the symptoms of sciatica and bulging spinal discs.

Activator Method®

The Activator Method is a technique the team uses in spinal adjustments. The Activator Method device sends rapid pulses of energy into your damaged muscles to prevent them from contracting or tensing.

Soft tissue therapy

Soft tissue therapy involves applying targeted pressure to soft tissues, such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments, to release tension and pain.

Other treatments for back pain include massage and physical therapy, as well as rest, ice, and heat therapy.
