Signs and Symptoms of Whiplash

Whiplash is a type of injury that occurs in the neck. It develops when the head suddenly and forcefully gets jolted back and forth. The movement causes the neck to whip beyond its usual range of motion. Whiplash is typically associated with car accidents.

However, it can also occur in sports or any other situation where the head is subjected to sudden movement or impact. Whiplash can range from mild to severe. The symptoms can change with the extent of the injury.

Neck Pain and Stiffness

Neck pain caused by whiplash can be dull, sharp, or burning. It may worsen with movement or some activities. The pain may also be accompanied by muscle spasms or tightness in the neck. Whiplash can cause damage to your muscles, ligaments, and nerves in your neck, leading to inflammation and pain.

People with whiplash may also experience stiffness in the neck, making it hard to move their necks or turn their heads in particular directions. It can also cause a pressure or tightness sensation in the neck. The stiffness can worsen in the morning or after a period of inactivity, like sitting at a desk for several hours.

Headaches

Whiplash can cause mild to severe headaches. You may feel it at the base of your skull, temples, and forehead. You may also experience it behind your eyes. The headache may result from neck muscle tension or irritation of the nerves in your neck. It can also occur due to changes in blood flow to your brain.

Whiplash headaches may be throbbing or dull. They may last for several hours or days, accompanied by other symptoms. These may include dizziness, nausea, or light or noise sensitivity. For relief, over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medications can help.

Dizziness and Vertigo

Dizziness may make you faint or feel light-headed. Vertigo can cause a spinning or whirling sensation. The symptoms may arise due to changes in blood flow to the brain or damage to the inner ear.

Dizziness and vertigo can be accompanied by other symptoms like nausea and vomiting. You may also experience ringing in the ears. These symptoms can be distressing and make it difficult to perform daily activities.

Shoulder and Back Pain

Whiplash can cause shoulder and back pain due to damage to your muscles, ligaments, or nerves in these areas. The pain may be dull or sharp. It may also worsen with some movements.

Pain in the shoulders and upper back can be limiting, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks like lifting or carrying objects.

Arm Pain and Weakness

People with whiplash can experience pain and weakness in the arms. It may result from damage to the nerves that control the arms. Arm pain and weakness may make performing activities like lifting or gripping objects hard. You may also experience tingling or numbness in the arms.

Fatigue

Most people who experience whiplash experience fatigue. You may feel exhausted even after getting enough sleep. Fatigue can result from your body’s response to inflammation and pain. It can also occur due to depression or stress. Fatigue can limit performing everyday tasks or participating in activities that you enjoy.
